Our Story

Welcome to our Lunch for Life site.   Alex was born to Gretchen and PJ Lonero on August 24, 2000 in Greensburg, PA.  He was the perfect baby and very much loved by all.  Our family grew on August 20, 2002 and we had Alex's baby brother who he affectionately called "my" Neil.  In March of 2003, our lives started to change drastically.  Our once happy family was soon to be torn apart.  Alex started having night sweats, he started complaining of leg pain, he was very lathargic and then one morning he woke up with a fever that wouldn't go away for 2 weeks.  After many doctors telling us that it was something viral and take him home, including our local Children's hospital ER doctors. He was again sent to the ER after they found a lump on his neck.  Within 24 hours we were given the diagnosis of Stage IV neuroblastoma on Tuesday, April 8, 2003.  We immediately started treatment.  After exhausting all treatment in Pgh we traveled to NY City for a clinical trial of 3F8 antibody.  In April of 2004 we were given the news that no parent ever wants to hear, Alex's cancer had progressed and there was nothing left to do for him but take him home and love him.  Alex gained his wings in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 6, 2004 with his mom and dad by his side.
We miss him terribly everyday but do all that we can to keep his memory alive.  Lunch For Life is a great way to give hope to other families fighting this terrible disease so that they may not have an angel for a child.

Thank you

Thank you for helping us change the world. It is just one lunch out of your life and it will be the very gift that provides thousands of children with just that -- Life!
